El desencanto europeo: ¿fracaso de la comunicación política o rechazo de las políticas sustantivas de la Unión?

Leon, 17 September 2008

On September 17th, the University of León hosted an outreach seminar around RECON’s work packages on civil society and the public sphere (WP 5) and on the political economy of the EU (WP 7). The event was structured around a presentation of the results of the research project ‘Building the European Union’s social constituency‘, synthesized in the book Y por fin somos europeos, in which RECON researchers played a central role, as well as the impact these findings have on ongoing RECON research. The event was attended by a select number of key Spanish journalists and opinion-makers, including Miguel Ángel Aguilar and Lourdes Pérez.

RECON researchers and editors Hans-Jörg Trenz, Agustín José Menéndez and Fernando Losada launched their book ¿Y por fin somos europeos? La comunicación politica en el debate constituyente europeo. The volume presents the first comparative study on the political communication related to the EU’s constitutional treaty and is the result of a joint research project between the Universities of León, Leeds, Oslo and Humboldt University Berlin: ‘Building the European Union’s social constituency: exploring the dynamics of public claims-making and collective representation in Europe’, funded by the European Science Foundation (ESF).

In addition to the research undertaken in this project, ongoing research in RECON was presented. John Erik Fossum introduced the overall RECON project, while Agustín José Menéndez focused on work package 7 ‘The Political Economy of the European Union‘ and Hans-Jörg Trenz on work package 5 ‘Civil Society and the Public Sphere‘. The topics were discussed in a round table with Miguel Angel Aguilar (El País/Cadena SER, President of the Association of European Journalists), Carlos Maria Bru (President of the European Movement in Spain, former Member of the European Parliament), Andrea Greppi (Professor in Philosophy of Law at the University Carlos III) and  Lourdes Pérez Rebollar  (opinion director for the regional press of Grupo Vocento, the leading multimedia communications group in the press market in Spain).
